The engagement
How an engagement works
Tell us what is going on and we will name the package.
Your retainer covers the scope listed for your package, every month, for one fixed fee. There is no meter on the invoice.
Anything outside that scope is quoted in writing before it starts and appears on the following invoice. Nothing is billed without notice first.
If the work runs well past the scope two months running, we propose the next package with 15 days notice, or we trim the scope. Your call.
Packages are reviewed once a year at renewal against trailing-twelve-month revenue.
The fee buys a standing team and a set of outcomes, not a bank of time, so there is nothing to roll over and nothing to lose.
For context
What growing businesses end up hiring.
Owners asked us what the rest of the back office costs, so the full list is here. Only the rows marked for controller scope or the bookkeeping add-on are work we do.
For context only. MTL Services does not provide assistant, marketing or social-media services; the rows marked “No” are here because owners asked us what the whole back office costs.

Cost-to-hire estimates use Florida 2025–26 market pay (BLS OEWS May 2025, Robert Half 2026, Indeed), Florida 2026 payroll taxes, KFF 2025 employer health costs, and SHRM 2025 hiring-cost benchmarks; they exclude the owner's management time, vacancy and turnover. Fractional work costs more per hour than an employee's hour; the saving comes from buying only the hours you need. Entry offers
Four ways to start.
Most engagements begin with the consult. What happens next depends on what the thirty minutes show.
01
Free 30-minute consult
30 minutes
We ask about revenue, entities, who does the books today, what your lender or surety asks for, and what is late. Then we tell you whether the Diagnostic is needed or you can start with Controller Essentials directly.
02
Financial Health Diagnostic
10 business days
Credited to month one of any band signed within 30 days.
When it is the first stepBehind on reconciliations, more than one entity, a lender covenant, revenue above $6M, or a cleanup smell. Optional for Controller Essentials and Controller + Cash when the consult shows the books are current.
03
Books Cleanup / Catch-up
2-6 weeks
For books that are too far behind for a controller engagement to start cleanly. Fixed after the diagnostic.
04
Advisory Projects
4-12 weeks
Lender-readiness pack, budget build, system migration, pricing and margin study, exit readiness. Fixed price, scoped in writing with a not-to-exceed.
